Benefits of pure desi ghee in Ayurveda

Ghee in Ayurveda is not uncommon but a rather known fact for centuries among its consumers. Ayurveda (Ayur – life, Veda – science), is the science of living life the healthy way in conjunction with nature. Following its principles enriches your life while keeping diseases at bay, and emphasizes on the correct balance in the diet. A very popular Ayurvedic proverb says, 'When your diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; when your diet is correct, medicine is of no need'.

We all are a part of nature, Ayurveda as a science revolves around the three fundamental energies: movement, transformation, and structure. In Sanskrit, they are known as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), forming the characteristics of our body and mind.

Ghee in Ayurveda

Ghee is the best oily food. It is cool (heat pacifying) and increases the life span. If prepared as per ancient literature, it is the supreme powerful food which has supreme strength and is useful in curing many diseases.

If you speak the Ayurveda language, you probably know about this piece of text already. Great classic ayurvedic texts - Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam are the cornerstones of Ayurveda. They accentuate the role of ghee in this science of life. It is the foundational ingredient of most ayurvedic medicines. However, ghee here refers to pure desi A2 cow ghee prepared by the ancient ‘bilona’ process. Here are a few reasons why ghee holds importance in Ayurveda:

Cures Pitta Dosha

Ghee elevates Agni (digestive fire) without aggravating Pitta - the functioning of fire within the body. As mentioned in the Charak Samhita ghee cools the body. Hence it’s known as a magic potion that is hot yet cool. Ghee counters the oily, sharp, hot, light, spreading, and liquid qualities of Pitta by its sweetness and cool nature.

Cures Vata Dosha

Considered as the primary dosha in Ayurveda, the other two doshas can't move without it. Ghee counters dry and rough properties of the Vata Dosha by its unctuousness.

Cures Kapha Dosha

Kapha is the force of stability because of the grounded and stable elements that create it. Ghee counters the Kapha Dosha with its sweetness. Ghee increase Kapha within the body thereby increasing the Ojas (the essence of immunity and life).

Panchakarma

This five-fold treatment is the heart of Ayurveda as it is considered a prerequisite before any major treatment. Ayurveda believes in cleansing the body of the toxins by ingesting ghee, which penetrates in the toxins and then dissolves them. This process helps expulsion of waste from the body popularly known as detox.

Ghee in pregnancy

According to Ayurveda, diet plays a pivotal role in pregnancy, as the life within draws nutrients solely from the mother's diet and stresses on the need for a nutrition-rich diet including A2 cow ghee. The energy drawn from the mother's diet nourishes the mother as well as baby and facilitates the formation of breast milk. Ghee is a fixture in an Ayurvedic pregnancy diet, and being a powerhouse of energy nourishes the mother and baby very well.

Ghee's goodness is like Lord Rama and the Doshas with many faces are like Ravana. Rama eventually kills Ravana just like ghee cures the doshas. Ghee enriches our lives in infinite ways, providing ample reasons for us to go by the research of our ancestors. Give AmrutamA2 cow ghee goodness a try, and see the magic unfold for yourself!
